Weather: storms, snow, hurricanes, rainbows and eclipses
The sea has weather, and it is the same for everyone: it is worked out from the world clock and where you are, so a storm you can see on the horizon is the storm your crewmates see, drifting the same way on the same wind.

The further out, the wilder
| Where | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Near home waters | Fair most of the time, now and then a shower. |
| Mid seas | Rain and thunderstorms rolling in, a sky you can read: dark towers of cloud with curtains of rain under them can be seen miles off. |
| The deep sea | Storms often, with lightning and thunder that arrives after the flash. Waves rise in a gale, fog thickens, the light fails. |
| The cold north | Rain turns to snow, and the worst storms to blizzards: a white-out, flakes driven sideways, the sea heaving. |
| Deep warm water | Hurricanes: great spinning discs of cloud tens of miles across with a calm eye. You will see one turning on the horizon long before it reaches you. Give it a wide berth. |
Wonders
- Lightning and thunder: in a storm, forks strike the sea around you and the thunder follows. Far storms flicker from inside.
- Rainbows: when a shower stands off to one side of the sun, a rainbow (often a double) hangs opposite it.
- Eclipses: very rarely, about one world day in seventy, the moon covers the sun at midday. The sky goes dark, stars come out, the horizon glows like dusk, and a corona burns round a black sun for a minute or two.
